Blood, Sweat & Tears' entry in Columbia/Legacy's SUPER HITS line of budget compilations is a serviceable, though brief, compilation of hits and album tracks by one of the leading standard-bearers of late '60s/early '70s horn rock. Unlike most Blood, Sweat & Tears compilations, SUPER HITS includes selections from the group's first, best, and most experimental album, the Al Kooper-led CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN.
"I Can't Quit Her" is clearly this disc's highlight, a powerful, jazz-inflected blues-rocker. Kooper left after that groundbreaking album, and with the addition of Canadian belter David Clayton-Thomas, the group settled into a string of blaring, brass-heavy, undeniably catchy hit singles, including "Spinning Wheel," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and the Laura Nyro-penned "And When I Die," all of which are included here.
