Michael J. Shea, PhD, was one of the first certified Full Instructors of Craniosacral Therapy in 1986 by the Upledger Institute. He teaches human embryology in the pre- and perinatal psychology doctoral programs at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. His clinical focus is on treating infants and children with neurological problems and developmental delays. A student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and former apprentice with a Navajo medicine man, he lives in Juno Beach, FL.
“Michael Shea has produced a fascinating insight into human
embryology. He shows how the early movements and formations of the
embryo not only relate to the creation of the body and integration
of the systems, but also how they are the precursors for the
development of the relational dynamics in the baby, infant, and
adult. He proposes that practitioners can directly relate to these
early forms through a unique development in touch that can bring
about changes in our relationship to ourselves, to others, and to
the world around us.”
—Ged Sumner, director of Body Intelligence Trainings and author of
Cranial Intelligence: A Practical Guide to Biodynamic Craniosacral
Therapy
“Michael Shea is a master teacher with a gift for weaving together
immense bodies of research, information, and insights on
Craniosacral Therapy and its influence on the whole human being.
True to form, this volume continues his holographic exploration
into the development and functioning of human life and the
influential dynamics of the practitioner-patient relationship. Dr.
Shea finds the space where physiology and archetypal symbology
intersect to awaken a new understanding of who we were born to
be—and who we still have the potential to become.”
—Sharon Desjarlais, CC, CMMS, founder of CranioSacral Success and
featured columnist for Massage Today
“Michael Shea continues to expand his explanation of embryology and
early development in understandable, practical, and creative ways.
He ignites awe for the miracle of life and the mystical aspects of
biodynamic practice. He navigates the frontier, where science and
spirit meet, and lays the groundwork for a profound therapeutic and
healing relationship.”

director of International Institute of Craniosacral Balancing®
(ICSB) and teacher and practitioner of Craniosacral Biodynamics and
pediatrics in the biodynamic field
“Michael Shea finds a way to articulate the ‘almost ungraspable.’
He weaves deliciously among hard data, personal anecdotes, dreams,
spirit, literature, politics, and humor. He writes sentences and
words so that there is space between them, so they can be uncovered
as we sink or evolve into all he has been able to capture.”
—Amy Zak Urban, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist (BCST), licensed
massage therapist, and Montessori school administrator
